Short-term variations in the zooplankton community related to water exchange processes in the Gullmar fjord, Sweden

Received on January 1, 1987; accepted on August 24, 1987 Short-term variations in the zooplankton community in relation to hydrographical exchange processes were studied from February to April 1985 in the sill area of the Gullmar fjord, situated on the west coast of Sweden. It was concluded that the hydrodynamic processes were of great importance for the short-term variations in the zooplankton abundance and species composition. Furthermore, it was found that due to the complex nature of the exchange processes and zooplankton patchiness, the predictability of the development of the zooplankton community in the fjord is poor. Fractionated sampling in stratified waters is discussed, as well as the effect of different water retention times above and below the halocline.
