Respiratory rates in the cladoceran Ceriodaphnia dubia in Lake Rotongaio, a monomictic lake
Taupo Research Laboratory, Division of Marine and Freshwater Science, DSIR PO Box 415, Taupo, New Zealand
Received on November 7, 1986; accepted on March 26, 1987 The experimentally measured oxygen consumption rate by the cladoceran, Ceriodaphnia dubia, showed a linear increase between 5 and 20°C. Oxygen consumption rates of C. dubia were estimated in situ from respiratory electron transport system (ETS) activity in Lake Rotongaio during summer stratification and winter mixing. Oxygen consumption was 0.002 µl O2 animal1 h1 in the hypolimnion and 0.076 µl O2 animal1 h1 in the epilimnion during stratification. Implications of respired oxygen for metabolic carbon requirements are discussed.
