La reproduction de Temora stylifera: ses implications anatomiques en relation avec le facteur nutrition
Laboratoire Arago 66650 Banyuls-sur-Mer et 1Station Zoologique 06230 Villefranche-sur-Mer, France
Received on May 1, 1985; accepted on April 1, 1986 The culture of copepods under different feeding regimes has allowed us to determine the effects of food availability on egg laying. In Temora stylifera spawning appears to be modified by the food resources of the adult. Conditions encountered during development have little effect on spawning. The life span of females is reduced by high food availability. In such cases the sex organs are hypertrophied, the oviducts being distended by the large oocytes. The ovary is little affected by changes in food availability, while the size of the oviducts varies in relation to feeding. The size of the genital system is reduced in older females. Variations in food concentration induce variations of several days in the time required for egg laying. A rapid maturation of the oocytes, combined with nutrition and the availability of food permits Temora stylifera to optimize egg laying.
