The Scyphomedusae of the Rockall Trough, northeastern Atlantic Ocean

J. Mauchline and P.F. Harvey

The Dunstaffnage Marine Research Laboratory P.O. Box No. 3, Oban, Argyll, UK

Received on February 1, 1983; accepted on August 1, 1983 An extensive series of samples between the surface and 2700 m depth have been taken in the Rockall Trough between 1973 and 1978. The coronate medusae, in decreasing order of abundance occurring in the Trough are: Periphylla periphylla, Atolla wyvillei, A. parva, A. vanhoeffeni and Nausithoë globifera. The last species was rare and no information on its biology was obtained. The other species breed within the Trough, the three Atolla species throughout the year. Few large mature Periphylla periphylla were caught and its breeding season remains undefined. Their morphology and vertical and geographical distributions are briefly discussed. The semaeostomid medusae, Pelagia noctiluca, Aurelia aurita and Cyanea lamarckii also occurred, the latter two species confined to the Rockall Bank.
