Observations on Noctiluca scintillans Macartney (Ehrenb.) (Dinophyceae) with notes on an intracellular bacterium
Department of Marine Biology, University College of North Wales Bangor, UK
Received on December 1, 1981; accepted on February 1, 1982 A re-examination is made of the external features of Noctiluca scintillans, Macartney (Ehrenb.) using the scanning electron microscope. This has demonstrated the presence in a surface groove of a single flagellum which is deployed in a hemi-helical manner and possesses a wing-like extension on the flagellum. The taxonomic significance of this and other superficial structures is considered in relation to the accepted dinophycean characters. The occurrence, origin and possible composition of the thin layer covering the tentacle is presented. Intracellular bacteria are described in the cell cytoplasm which differ in their association with the host from that of a previous report. The significance of this association is discussed.
