A zooplankton bioassay chamber for lab and field use1

W. John O'Brien and Dean Kettle

Department of Systematics & Ecology, University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas 66045, USA

Received on October 1, 1980; accepted on March 1, 1981

Field and laboratory study of zooplankton has been hampered by the lack of standardized and reliable culture methods. This paper describes a zooplankton bioassay chamber for both laboratory and in situ use that is easy to construct, inexpensive, and suitable for even very small zooplankton species such as Bosmina. The chamber, which allows easy access to animals for examination or counting, may be particularly useful in toxicity bioassays.
