A simple seawater-powered plankton wheel
Ocean Sciences Centr Memorial University of Newfoundland St John's NF, A1C 5S7, Canada 1Marine Sciences Institute, University of California Santa Barbara, CA 93106, USA
Received on April 4, 1996; accepted on August 20, 1996 Two designs are described for making water-powered plankton rotators. Instead of using an electric motor, these devices use water pressure supplied by shipboard saltwater systems both to turn and cool samples. These systems are small, portable, rugged, very inexpensive and safer than conventional plankton wheels. The two designs outlined below have been used in the field to form diatom aggregates and conduct zooplankton grazing experiments.
