Red Tide Biology Section, Red Tide Research Division, Nansei National Fisheries Research Institute Ohno, Saeki, Hiroshima 739-04 1Faculty of Agriculture, Kyoto University Kitashirakawa, Sakyo-ku, Kyoto 606-01, Japan
Received on February 6, 1996; accepted on April 30, 1996 A natural population of Heterosigma akashiwo was collected and incubated in the dark with autoclaved marine sediment. A portion of the cells in the population changed into cysts, which were identical to H.akashiwo cysts found in the field. The cysts required at least 2 weeks of mandatory dormancy before germination.
