Natural occurrence of phycoerythrocyanin-like pigment in cyanobacterial blooming samples dominated by Microcystis in Lake Kasumigaura

We describe the occurrence of phycocyanin and phycoerythrocyanin-like pigment in natural Microcystis colonies collected in Lake Kasumigaura. For differentiating pigments, the combination of simultaneous determination of molecular weights of
and ß and subunits by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry with HPLC separation and fluorescence measurements was used. It was suggested that the natural Microcystis colonies may contain the phycoerythrocyanin-like pigment, judged from the excitation and emission spectra. Measured pigments consisted of different molecular weights of
and ß subunits, but the molecular weights of
and ß subunits in both phycocyanin and phycoerythrocyanin-like pigments were not always identical.
