Phycocyanins were extracted from natural Microcystis aeruginosa colonies. Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) was used to investigate the molecular weights of
and ß subunits of phycocyanins. ESI-MS measurements showed that the molecular weights of phycocyanins extracted from Microcystis aeruginosa f. aeruginosa collected at two different eutrophic lakes were not identical. This result suggested that the molecular weights of phycocyanins may not always be identical among the same species of natural cyanobacteria and one may be able to characterize the cyanobacteria by a chemical taxonomic method through the determination of phycocyanin molecular weights. Molecular weight determination of phycocyanins by ESI-MS may have great potential to classify the species of cyanobacteria.
