Buoyancy properties of the giant diatom Ethmodiscus
Marine Sciences Research Center, State University of New York Stony Brook, NY 11794-5000, USA Present address: Environmental Sciences Program, University of Massachusetts, Boston Harbor Campus Boston, MA 02125-3393, USA
Received on November 15, 1990; accepted on August 22, 1991 Net-collected Ethmodiscus spp. were examined and found to be capable of positive buoyancy with ascent rates averaging 1.4 m h1 on individually measured cells, and 0.3 m h1 using a homogeneous settling technique. These data, together with published reports of positive buoyancy in Rhizosolenia, indicate that upward movement is a widespread phenomenon in large oceanic diatoms. These observations also suggest that published size-rate relationships for marine diatoms require revision to include the effects of positive buoyancy.
