The behaviour of the predatorMesocyclops thermocyclopoides and prey Eodiaptomus japonicus was observed in their several developmental stages. Late copepodid M.thermocychpoides preyed on late naupliar and early copepodid E.japonicus. M.thermocyclopoides showed ambush behaviour, and was not detected by E.japonicus before attack. Detection frequency by M.thermocyclopoides increased as development of E.japonicus advanced. However, late copepodids of E.japonicus were avoided by juvenile and adult female M.thermocyclopoides, and were probably recognized as mates by adult males. Neither temperature nor the presence of other food affected the predator-prey behaviour
