Enhancement of the phototactic reaction in Daphnia hyalina by a chemical mediated by juvenile perch (Perca fluviatilis)

J. Ringelberg

Department of Aquatic Ecology, University of Amsterdam Kruislaan 320, 1098 SM Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Received on January 24, 1990; accepted on July 18, 1990 Experiments with Daphnia hyalina demonstrated that the phototactic reaction to changes in light intensity is strongly enhanced in the presence of a chemical substance mediated by juvenile perch. In constant light intensity, the daphnids were found close to the bottom of the experimental aquarium. The phenomenon may result in a diel vertical migration. This would decrease predation pressure near the surface.
