Relationships between fecal pellet production and feeding in the calanoid copepod Boeckella
Department of Zoology, University of New Hampshire, Spaulding Life Science Building Durham, NH 03824, USA
Received on August 10, 1988; accepted on February 14, 1990 The number, size (mm3 pellet 1) and total volume of fecal pellets produced (mm3 h1) by Boeckella titicacae increased with concentration of Chlorella and natural seston in three different lakewaters from Bahia de Puno and Lago Grande of Lake Titicaca and nearby Laguna Arapa. The three lakewaters differed in the size and number of fecal pellets produced at seston concentrations >0.5 mg dry wt l1. However, the total volume of fecal pellets egested varied little. Large-sized food (>10 µg) resulted in larger pellets but smaller total fecal production. Food concentration had parallel effects on the production of feces and on feeding rates. Both fecal production and feeding increased linearly with food concentration with saturation between 5 and 7.5 x 105 Chlorella ml1 (3.75.6 mg dry wt l1). Varied responses in fecal production when fed different size fractions of lake seston suggest Boeckella has a complex and flexible feeding behavior. Feeding preferences of B.titicacae and B.occidentalis (Ivlev index) for two seston size fractions are generally reflected by fecal production.
