Distribution of epiplanktonic Chaetognatha along a transect in the Indian Ocean

P. Andreu, C. Marrase and E. Berdalet

Instituto de Ciencias del Mar, Paseo Nacional s/ 08003 Barcelona, España

Received on June 9, 1987; accepted on December 9, 1988 Chaetognaths were identified and counted in 23 samples collected in the west Indian Ocean along a transect from the Gulf of Aden to the Cape of Good Hope, in February–March 1967. Although the hydrographic front located at 5°S does not seem to represent a barrier for the distribution of the majority of the species, some of them are in a preferential area south or north of the front. The principal component analysis indicates the locations where the more intense overlapping of species takes place. It is important to mention the occurrence of S.pseudoserratodentata in the proximity of Madagascar Island.
